In a small village in Northern Italy in the alpine valley where the collective was born, an unique language – RUEGLIESE - is spoken. In this language 'biloura' means 'at this precise moment'. In a Brazilian region, in a local dialect that is only oral and not written, 'biloura' means 'vertigo' or 'madness'.
In 2013 about 20 artists from different nationalities and artistic backgrounds came together, following the open call of the Italian artist Silvia Ribero to initiate an artistic, intercultural and human exchange, from which the collective was born. From this initial meeting was developed the vision and desire to create artistic forms and languages that can go beyond categories and borders, to address the human directly, through and beyond different cultures.
The first four years of BILOURA's work were spent almost exclusively in the creation and refinement of methodologies of the practice of the performer, for innovating performative, dramaturgical and directorial languages. "Per-forming" - hence "crossing forms" – became the focus of the artistic work, dedicating oneself to practice and research continuously, and thus became the core of the collective's work.
Within each working group and in each project the traditional hierarchy of theatrical work (director, author, performer, assistant) is rejected. This is possible and effective thanks to continuous investment of time and effort in perfecting methods of collective creation, directing and dramaturgy and horizontal organisation of work.
A place of creation, dialogue, poetry, experiment, investigation, complexity.
An analogue art form made of organic material: breath and sweat, voices and muscles always searching to overstep limits and boundaries.
ART
MANIFEST
Over the past years BILOURA developed its own artistic research and creation method. Focusing on exploration, Cross Culture Performing Arts is movement through arts and cultures. It causes ripples that expand into the surrounding landscape, in which it has its source. It is a movement of crossing and transcending at the same time. It involves both knowing something and leaving something behind, continuously. Styles, genres, forms, identities, theories.
Cross Culture Performing Arts is based on a simple affirmation: that humanity is one. The encounter with another person, beyond the barriers that separate us, beyond the fragmentations we experience, is worth seeking in order to encounter ourselves. BILOURA developed this method in the belief that the great wealth of variety of cultures and subcultures sustains, nurtures and revitalises art.
Cross Culture Performing Arts is an artistic and political action for a global society less dominated by fear and homologation. Turning around contemporary socio-political issues, it aims to build bridges where there are non. In an era where walls are built and fear and hatred is spread, where people often live as alienated individuals, encounters through cultural expressions are more important than ever.
